Why subscription brands need subscription-native rewards
For a subscription brand, the first order is the easy part. The value is in the customer staying subscribed, renewing month after month, and eventually referring the next subscriber. Yet most referral and loyalty tools were built for one-time purchases: they hand out coupon codes that only work at a standard checkout, and they go quiet the moment a customer becomes a subscriber.
That creates a real gap. A subscriber doesn't visit your checkout every month; Recharge charges them automatically. If your reward program can only issue codes for the cart, your most valuable customers, the ones already on subscription, have no frictionless way to use the rewards they earn. And your program has no way to recognize the behavior that actually drives subscription economics: the renewal.
The Friendbuy + Recharge integration closes that gap by making the subscription itself the place where rewards are earned and spent.
What the Friendbuy + Recharge integration does
The integration connects your Friendbuy referral and loyalty programs directly to Recharge, the leading subscription management platform for Shopify brands. It delivers six core capabilities:
How auto-applied rewards and accumulating credit work
When an advocate earns a referral reward or a loyalty member redeems points, Friendbuy creates a discount in Recharge and applies it to the customer's next active subscription order. You control the structure of that reward in the Friendbuy retailer app:
- Discount type: percentage, fixed dollar amount, or free shipping
- Applies to: subscriptions, one-time products, or both
- Duration: the next charge only, the next X charges, or all future charges
- Eligibility rules: code prefixes, minimum purchase amounts, and new-customer-only restrictions for friend incentives
The right reward for subscribers and non-subscribers
Not every advocate is a subscriber, and a reward that assumes an upcoming renewal falls flat for someone who doesn't have one. With Friendbuy and Recharge, you can configure distinct rewards based on the advocate's subscription status:
- Subscribers earn Recharge credit or free products applied directly to their subscription, so the reward lands on the order they already have coming
- Non-subscribers earn store credit, Shopify coupon codes, or gift cards they can use on their next purchase
Both segments draw from the same tiered reward configuration, so you set it once per tier and Friendbuy routes the right reward to the right advocate automatically.
Credit that accumulates across renewals
Auto-apply isn't limited to a single reward. Every reward a customer earns adds to a running balance that keeps applying to each subsequent subscription order until it runs out. An advocate who drives three successful referrals doesn't end up with three coupon codes to manage; their combined reward value simply comes off their next charges, automatically.
Built-in fallback: if a discount can't be auto-applied for any reason, Friendbuy automatically sends the customer a reward email containing a coupon code they can apply manually on their next order. No reward is ever lost to an edge case.
Rewarding subscription renewals
Renewal is the moment subscription economics are won or lost, and the integration treats it as a first-class reward event. With the Subscription Renewal earning event, you can:
- Reward every renewal with points, account credit, or a Recharge discount, turning retention itself into a loyalty currency
- Reward a specific renewal using Nth-conversion rules, for example a bonus on the third or sixth charge, where your cohort data says churn risk peaks
- Add a reward delay so rewards only issue after your cancellation or return window passes
- Apply custom validation so customers only earn when they meet the criteria you define
A companion earning event covers subscription starts, handled through the purchase event with SKU-level targeting, so you can reward the moment a customer converts to a subscription as well as every renewal after it.
Free product rewards: stacking value past Recharge's discount limit
Recharge allows only one discount on a subscription at a time. For brands that already run a persistent subscribe-and-save discount, that limit has traditionally meant loyalty rewards had nowhere to go: the discount slot was taken.
Free product rewards solve this. Instead of competing for the discount slot, the reward is a product Friendbuy automatically adds to the customer's upcoming subscription order. A meal plan subscriber redeems points and finds a free dessert in the next delivery. A pet brand's member gets a free bag of treats in the next box, on top of their standing 10% subscriber discount.
Configuration is fully self-serve in the Friendbuy retailer app:
- Search your Shopify catalog by product name or SKU to select the reward product
- Set the points cost for redemption
- Product validation automatically prevents out-of-stock or draft products from being issued to customers
New: reward advocates when their referred friend renews
Until now, referral programs paid the advocate at one moment: their friend's first conversion. For a subscription brand that's backwards. The first order is the cheapest part of the relationship, and a referred friend who churns after one box may never cover their incentive cost. The value is in the friend staying subscribed, and advocates had no stake in that.
Renewal milestone rewards change the payout model. Instead of a single reward at conversion, you stagger the advocate's rewards across their friend's renewal milestones:
- Escalating rewards per milestone. For example, the advocate earns $10 when their friend completes a first renewal and $20 at the second. Milestones don't need to be contiguous; you can reward the second and fourth renewals and skip the rest.
- Pay only for realized value. If the friend churns before a milestone, that reward is never issued. Only active renewals count: a successful charge advances a milestone, while skips, pauses, failed charges, and refunds do not.
- Once per friend, guaranteed. Each milestone reward is issued at most once per referred friend, even if renewals are processed late or more than once internally.
- Optional guardrails. Set a milestone window in days, weeks, or months, so the friend must reach each milestone within a set time of their initial conversion, and restrict counting to qualifying products by SKU.
- Your choice on the first order. Keep rewarding the friend's initial conversion as you do today, or shift the advocate's rewards entirely onto renewals.
Configuration lives inside the tiered advocate rewards you already use. A new setting lets each reward tier count the friend's renewal number instead of the advocate's referral count, with the same per-tier reward types and reward emails, including Recharge discounts that auto-apply to the advocate's own subscription.
Why it matters: renewal milestones turn your referral budget into a retention instrument. Advocates are motivated to refer friends who will genuinely stick, and every dollar of reward spend maps to a renewal that already happened, not a conversion that might churn.
